Ancestry Library Edition
The Library has a powerful new database in its collection. The Ancestry Library Edition is an ideal resource for genealogists, family historians, and local history researchers. Ancestry provides access to over 3 billion names in 4,000 searchable databases and more content is added every business day. The Ancestry Library Edition includes records from the United States Federal Census; military records; court, land and probate records; vital and church records; directories; passenger lists and more.
Ancestry is available at any Internet computer in all the library branches. It is not available outside the library system. The only requirement for patron's use is a valid WPL library card. See the library's website at The Wichita Public Library for library branch locations.
Among specific kinds of resources included in The Ancestry Library Edition are:
- U. S. Federal Census 1790-1930 - includes census images and every name indexes
- U.K. & Ireland Census Collection - consists of name indexes and census images for 1871, 1891 and 1901
- Birth, Marriage, & Death Records - includes the Social Security Death Index
- England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales Parish and Probate Records (1500s-1837)
- England and Wales Civil Registration Index (1837-Present)
and many other sources from all over the U.S. including birth, marriage and death indexes, church records, cemetery inscriptions, and probate records.
- Immigration Collection - original images of passenger and immigration lists from New York (1851-1891) and San Francisco (1893-1953), plus the New Orleans passenger lists (1820-1850), New York Petitions for Naturalization Index (1792-1906) and the Wuerttemberg Emigration Index.
- Military Records Collection - features the World War I Draft Registration Cards, the Civil War Service Records, the World War II and Korean Conflict Veterans Interred Overseas and about 100 other U. S. military related databases
- Biography and History Collection - contains the 200-volume American Genealogical-Biographical Index, the Federal Writers Project Slave Narratives, the Dawes Commission Index (1898-1914), the Daughters of American Revolution Lineage Books and hundreds of other U. S. and U. K. biographical databases.
- Other Collections - include such sources as court, land and probate records, family trees and message boards, city directories, and historical maps, periodicals and newspapers.
Heritage Quest
This database provided through the Kansas State Library Card is the perfect complement to the Ancestry database. It provides not only United States Census records, but also searches for family and local histories, PERSI the periodical article listings, Revolutionary War records, Freedman's Bank, and the U.S. Serial Set of Petitions and Private Relief Actions of the US Congress. You need a Kansas State Library Card to access this data base through WPL or at The Kansas Library Card Data Bases.
